MoCo Epic

The MoCo Epic is back for 2022! For our 12th edition of Epic Rides, we are sticking to the original direction for all courses. Prepare to experience some of the best singletrack in the Mid-Atlantic in an all new way. Showcasing over 70 miles across 11 different parks in Montgomery County, the possibilities for an epic adventure are endless with the MoCo Epic. This event offers something for every rider with 6 unique Epic Ride Courses and 2 Youth Rides (Saturday) that feature twisty singletrack, plenty of rocks and roots to skip over, and the scenic beauty of Montgomery County. New in 2022* - The Advanced Kid's Ride and Sunday's '10 Miler' (perfect for those new to MTB) will include an aid station to refuel!

The MoCo Epic is an organized RIDE - not  race - which allows you to enjoy your adventure at your own pace and experience the renowned "epic" aid stations (up to 8 along the course!) that have historically featured everything from hula dancers to breakfast on a stick!  The 2022 MoCo Epic promises to be loads of fun-join the MTB community for a day on the trails!

Come on Sat, Oct 9th for the MoCo Epic Family Day, a day focused on fun for the whole family to enjoy (kid's ride, skill clinics, group rides, Jump Jam, etc.). Don't forget to sign-up for Gravity Soul's Jump Jam Competition. Skip the  line on Sunday morning as well by picking up your rider packet at the same time as having fun with the family.

*Changes for 2022

- Event t-shirts are optional, and must be ordered prior to 9/14/2022. To keep costs down, we won't be ordering extras so make sure you order yours during registration.

- We're working to reduce the time you spend in line(s)!  You'll get your bike plate, beer tickets, wristband and shirt (if ordered) when you check-in BEFORE your ride.  (So you'll need to stash some stuff back in your car!)  When you return from your ride we'll have a quick refueling station AT THE FINISH LINE so you can have a cold drink and snack before heading in to the beer garden!

MoCo Epic Proceeds: For the past 5 years, proceeds have been placed in a fund dedicated to improving the MoCo Epic trails!

Past projects include:

  • Professional builder Refurbishment of the Schaeffer white loop including moving 1/3 mile of trail off the gas line ROW and into the woods
  • Purchase of two brush mowers and two gas powered hedge trimmers to keep Schaeffer Farm trails open in the summer
  • Replace rotting bridge on the Seneca Ridge Trail

Planned future projects near term focus on upgrading 3.5 miles of the Seneca Greenway trail, including two miles along the dangerous Game Preserve Road, to allow it to open to bikes

  • Build safe passage under Clopper Road
  • Redo several steep sections to be passable by bikes
  • Build a new 20 foot bridge and reroute of a section that is falling into Seneca Creek.

An equal amount initially went into MORE's general funds.  Of this amount $50,000 has since been transferred to MORE's General Trail Fund, and has helped finance new trail at Patapsco, Bacon Ridge, Lake Fairfax, and Locust Shade among others.

Volunteer Notes

Back in 2022!

This includes Traffic Direction at 5:30a, Aid Station Support Drivers at 6:00a, and Registration at 6:30a.

Volunteers who sign up for these specific early shifts will be provided breakfast and will special limited edition MORE swag!

Sweeper/Course De-marking

Volunteer sweepers will be selected on a merit based system. Not all volunteers registering for Sweeper/ Course De-Marking will be assigned Sweeper Slots. Preference will be given to volunteers that: 1) Have the ability to complete the expected tasks; 2) Volunteer for Course Marking; 3) Volunteer for other MoCo Epic 2021 volunteer slots; 4) Register early for Sweeper/ Course De-Marking and Course Marking.

Sweeper/ Course De-Marking volunteers have expected tasks to perform on Sunday. 1) Depart at the specified Course cutoff time from the specified location. 2) Complete the designated course. 3) Offer support to participants: fix flats; perform minor bike repairs; assist medical emergencies; call MoCo Command Center for SAG pick up. 4) Report to MoCo Command Center at Aid Station arrivals. 4) De-Mark designated sections of the course.

Sweeper/ Course De-Marking volunteers are required to carry a cell phone on Sunday while performing their duties as Sweeper/ Course De-Markers and provided their cell phone numbers to the MoCo Epic Planning Team.

Course Marking

This task is a key volunteer duty for the MoCo Epic! It involves riding trails or riding/driving road sections to mark trails for event riders. You will use provided laminated arrows to mark a segment of a given course as a member of a small team. The teams and the segments they mark will be determined by a SURVEY which will be sent out to each person who registers for this task. The intent of the survey is to determine your knowledge of the MoCo trails, as well as a ranking of your preference for which trails you'd like to mark. In addition to the tools we provide to mark the course, course markers should carry duct tape, a hammer, and zip ties to aid in course marking any sections that require creative placement of the arrows. Finally, when registering for this volunteer duty, please use your CELL PHONE as your primary phone number. The teams will be provided with your cell information to aid in communication on your course marking day, so please do not use your home phone number when registering to course mark!

Aid Station Staff

Please use this volunteer position signup only if you have already been assigned to help with an aid station. Aid stations rely on sponsors and local non-profit organizations to supply volunteers to work that day, and this position is intended to track those volunteers. Aid station volunteers receive riders, provide mechanical support, and keep food and hydration stocked, and are then invited to attend the party after closing!

Aid Station Support Drivers

We need help stocking the aid stations early in the morning on Sunday, as well as resupplying throughout the day and picking up after the sweepers pass through! Please sign up for this position only if you are comfortable driving the moving van and/or delivery truck that the MoCo Epic supplies for this task.

Sponsors

Our sponsors are a large part of making the MoCo Epic such a smashing success! If you would like to help support this event, please reach out to Peggy Flaxman about sponsorship opportunities.
