300 MILES ACROSS AFRICA IN 30 DAYS FOR K12 STUDENTS IN AFRICA: K12 STUDENTS IN AFRICA WALK TO AND FROM SCHOOL is a VIRTUAL TEAM EVENT that can be walked, jogged, run, biked, skateboarded, or rollerbladed collectively. Assemble your team of up to 6, 10, 15, 20, or 30 people and enjoy the 300-mile journey across Africa. Each day, K12 students, little girls, and little boys, as young as 7 years old, get up in the wee hours of the morning, between 4 and 5 am, complete their chores (sweeping, collecting water from a well or river, etc.) before WALKING 10 MILES OR MORE ON DUSTY AND UNSAFE ROADS TO AND FROM SCHOOLS that lack toilets, gender-based toilets, textbooks, whiteboards, student desks, computers, health clinics, basic school supplies, and exclude children with disabilities.
Starting today, October 11, 2021, assemble your team of 6, 10, 15, or up to 30 to virtually and collectively run, walk, bike, skateboard, or rollerblade 300 miles and fundraise any amount of your choice. A team could consist of relatives, family, a classroom (teacher + students), a school sports team (football, basketball team, etc.), a school department (Math, English, etc.), co-workers, college sports teams, corporation, a group of friends, etc. You will register individually but will participate in the challenge and fundraise collectively. You will track your distance using one of the many GPS-enabled tracking systems (e,.g., Strava, Map My Run, Garmin, Wahoo, etc.), upload your run/walk/bike, etc. and watch your team’s dot move across the map. A leaderboard will also track your progress against other teams. You can run, walk, bike, donate, and fundraise until December 12th, 2021.
Your participation in this event along with your fundraising efforts will transform the schooling experiences and lives of thousands of K12 students in Africa as every dollar makes a difference. Your registration, donations, and fundraising efforts will help 1. Purchase one (1) school bus to transport hundreds of K12 students from the villages of Tongon, Drissavogo, Kationron, and 7 more villages in the north of Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa, who currently walk 10 miles or more to and from school. The cost of the bus is $15,000. 2. Provide after-school academic enrichment activities to the most academically and economically challenged K12 students in Cotonou, Benin: The cost for the 2021-2022 school year is $13,000. 3. Equip (laptops +Ipads+ STEM kits) and operate Games For Africa's Africa STEM Center in Tseeviee, Togo. The Cost is $10,000 for the 2021-2022 school year. 4. Raise $12,000 towards the construction of the K12 school in the village of Tongon in northern Cote d'Ivoire. This is a long-term project that will address the root causes of the educational and health inequities facing youth in impoverished villages in the region of M'Bengue, Cote d'Ivoire while preventing thousands of students from walking 10 or more miles to and from school each day.
