Activities: Hike

Medved is excited to partner with representatives of Finger Lakes PRISM to bring you a 4 part monthly guided hike series focused on the education of Invasive Species.

An invasive species is an organism that is introduced to an area outside its native range that causes or has the potential to cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health.  The Field Guides will teach you how to identify common invasive species in our region, explain how different species become more prevalent over the course of the growing season, and provide education on what we can do to help fight invasive species and protect our parks.

Sign up for just one hike or the entire series!

All hikes will take place in Mendon Ponds Park.  Each outing will be approximately 2 hours in duration (we will not be in the woods in the dark!) and will be beginner level hikes, on flat terrain with many prolonged stops to discuss the surrounding foliage.  We may encounter muddy terrain, so please be prepared!  Strollers and pets are not allowed.  The specific meet up locations will be wet/dry condition dependent and we will notify all registered participants ahead of time.

Is it recommended that participants be prepared with water, bug repellent and sunscreen.  Long pants or tall socks are also recommended as we will be hiking during poison ivy and tick season!  You may also choose to download the iMapInvasives app on your phone prior to our hikes.  iMapInvasives is an online, mobile-friendly, GIS-based data management system that is used for tracking and managing invasive species. iMapInvasives is used by natural resource professionals and citizen scientists to quickly and easily report information about invasive species. The platform enables real-time tracking of infestations and improves management decisions to protect native species and ecosystems.

All proceeds will be donated to Cummings Nature Center for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid treatments. Help Save The Hemlocks!

Participants that register for the entire series will be entered into a drawing for a free pair of hiking shoes from Hoka One One!
