About the 2021 Beat Bob Boyd Challenge

For 11 years, Dr. Bob Boyd has hosted an informal 5k on the Sunday preceding Christmas "because there were usually no real races to run on this day". After Bob received a pacemaker, he challenged us to see who he could beat.  After the last finisher crossed the finish line, he'd distribute certificates to all those who beat him that said "I beat a man with a pacemaker"....and to pose for a classic photo of Bob bowing to them. Those who couldn't beat Bob received certificates that said "I was beat by a man with a pacemaker"...and to pose for the classic photo of Bob flexing his muscles.

In 2020 and again in 2021, Bob decided that he would like to keep the memory of Joe and Betty La Bruno alive and let this event for now and into the future stand as a memorial to this wonderful couple.

About Joe and Betty La Bruno:

When most people hit their mid-60s they tend to slow down, but not Joe La Bruno at age 64 he was still running a 10K race at a 7:42 per mile pace. It was this competitive drive that would keep him running into his late 80s. Alongside every good man, is a better woman, in Joe's case, it was his beloved wife Betty. Betty could be found at all of Joe's races cheering him and supporting all of the other runners. Aside from tempting us with her amazing coffee cake, she would help out at our club's annual meetings and at races.  Her unselfish devotion to the club earned her the esteemed Volunteer of the Year Award.  Both Joe and Betty were long time members of the Central Jersey Road Runners club, they often shared words of wisdom with all of us. All of us who knew Joe and Betty, knew the devotion they had for each other. Sadly the world lost Joe after a long illness and just 11 days later God called Betty home, the two of them are together again.

We dedicate this race to the memory and spirit of Joe and Betty La Bruno, they will always be with us. We are all better runners for having known them.

Please join us for this special run to commemorate Joseph and Betty LaBruno. A very special certificate will be emailed to each participant before year end.
