What is a Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk?
The Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk Series was created to honor the heroic life and death of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. Honor all of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and support our first responders and no in military who make extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty! This will be the SECOND year in Swansboro, and we are excited to bring our community together once again to HONOR our Military & First Responders, REMEMBER 9/11, and raise funds for the Tunnel to Towers programs.
How far is a Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk?
This is a 5K (3.1 miles) event. People of any age or ability are welcome to come out and run/walk/wheel/stroller to experience this event.
When/Where can I pick up my packet?
We will have packet pickup on Friday night 9/16 from 5-8 pm at the Swansboro Rec Center (site of the event the next day). You may also pickup your packet on the morning of the event – from 6-7:30 am at the event site (Swansboro Rec Center). Additional pickup options may be added.
Can I register the day of the run?
Yes. Online registration will stay open up until 30 minutes prior to the event start and will be setup for you to register on the morning of the event. However, if you wait to register ‘til the morning of the event, we cannot guarantee that we will have a T-shirt for you.
Do I have to wear my bib number?
Yes. Please display your bib on the front of your outermost garment. The bib does hold the timing chip, so without it, we will not be able to give you your race time.
I am a fast runner. Can I get a frontline position?
Our First Responders/Military members will lead out the 5K. Runners predicting a pace faster than a 7 minute/mile will be seeded in the front corral behind our starters.
Will there be awards for running?
Yes. Most awards are reserved to recognize first responders/military who run in their gear (in similar fashion to Steven Siller on 9/11), but we will have medals to recognize the fastest finishers in several other age/etc. categories. More details to come...
Will water be available?
Yes, there will be a water station along the route. There will also be water, Gatorade, fruit & snacks at the finish. Food trucks will be on-site offering a variety of food for purchase – with a portion of their proceeds from the event donated back to T2T.
What can I bring/use/wear to the event?
Strollers & wheelchairs are permitted on the course. Firefighter turnout gear & military backpacks are also permitted. Please leave all personal items/valuables locked securely in your vehicle. Tunnel to Towers Foundation will not be responsible for the loss of any items.
Does my registration fee count towards my fundraising goal?
No, your registration fee does not count toward the fundraising goal.
Can someone else pick up my packet for me?
Yes. They must present a copy of your registration receipt.
Can I still donate to a team and/or individual after the start of the race?
Yes. Donations will be accepted for 6 weeks after the event.
How can my company/organization sponsor this event?
Please send all sponsorship correspondence to Swansboro@t2t.org with your contact information and someone will be in touch with you within 24 hours.
I would like to donate goods or services to this event. How do I do that?
You can contact us at Swansboro@t2t.org. We make every effort to keep costs down to allow us to give the most to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Stephen Siller's name. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
As a participant, can I fundraise/encourage others to donate?
Yes! Once you are registered, you will be given directions to start your own fundraising page and you will be able to accept donations online. Do you want to donate cash/money? We can help you with that. Contact us at Swansboro@t2t.org and we can walk you through the process. Please give us your information so we can add it to your fundraising page.

Can I transfer my registration to another participant?
Yes. See information above OR contact us at Swansboro@t2t.org and we will manually change it in our system.
Can I get a refund?
We do not provide refunds for the event. If you cannot make the date or the Foundation needs to cancel the event, registration may be transferred to another person.
How can I volunteer?
It’s simple! Signup online as a Volunteer through our registration link or Email us at Swansboro@t2t.org. Volunteers are needed for Friday packet pickup & for Saturday’s event.
Do registrants get receipts?
When you register online, you should automatically receive a receipt. If you pay by credit card or check, that is your receipt. If paying in cash, we will provide a receipt upon request.
Will there be medical staff available on-site?
Yes, there will be an Emergency Medical Service team available on site. There is also radio communication available on the course to help communicate with the EMS.
What safety measures are you taking in regard to COVID-19?
We will be abiding by all local and state guidelines in regard to COVID-19.
Why is it required to answer YES or NO to the Covid-19 vaccination question?
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has followed all protocols & guidelines implemented since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. Each agency has its own regulations in place, and to remain prepared, Tunnel to Towers continues to collect data in order to comply with any new guidelines.
